CHAPTER SEVEN

Let’s Give Them Something to Talk About

I’m finally alone with Cole in his study, relaxing in the leather Chesterfield chairs at the hearth, bourbon in one hand and a cigar in the other.

“You wanted to have a private word?” asks Cole.

“Yup,” I say with an affirmative nod. Putting the cigar and drink down, I lean forward with my elbows on my knees. “I’ve been single a while, as you well know.”

“Ah, yes. The town has been buzzing since your arrival.”

Nodding again, I say, “No kidding. Did Beth-Ann invite every single woman in Holler Ridge to Thanksgiving?” I’ve been hit on so often that I just want to go home but needed to have this chat first.

“She just might’ve,” he says, almost choking on the cigar smoke. He puts it down in the ashtray and looks at me, slicing through the smalltalk. “Cut it straight, Dale.”

“I have a definite type.”

He nods. “I recall. Remember that end-of-year party we had when we were both working in Texas? I think you were the envy of every old married man there.”

“Exactly,” I reply, smoothing my palms on my dark jeans and leaning back. “I’m not interested in any of these divorced, widowed, or spinster types invited out here to meet me. I like them young for a reason, Cole, because they’re good to me. I don’t have to prove myself to anyone, and they look up to me because I am everything a man their age is not. I’ve sown my wild oats, I’ve played every field, I’ve been reckless and irresponsible, and now, I’m stable, dependable, mature, and wealthy. I have a lot to offer someone looking for a second chance with opportunities only a man like me can afford to give her.”

“I hear you, but if you say Jessica, we are going to have an issue.”

Chuckling, I shake my head. “Nope, not Jessica. Stacey. She’s exiled from home because she likes older men, and she is the shame of her hometown now, but she and I have had a talk about this. You and I are both countrymen. We grew up with a bible in one hand and reins in the other, and I tell you that she hit the nail on the head when she told me that what she wants is biblical. Parents used to look out for their daughters by arranging wealthy and mature suitors. Never before in our history have young ladies been left to boys their own age to shame, use, and scorn. Then they have babies too young with someone who can’t even afford the rent. The kids from that arrangement have no chance in life. We need to go back to the way things were where our young ladies have coming out balls, where they are introduced to every wealthy man in the area to court them. I want to move Stacey in with me and be that man for her. I’m forty-two, just the right age to settle down and be good to her.
